Nice to go back and read this after watching Season One 👌

A few years back, I picked up Invincible even knowing the caveat of how slow this started。 But I dropped it even without completing it due to how frustrated I got and now, re-reading this after watching through the amazing first season of the show, I still see why I dropped it and I don't blame myself for doing so。But only if I got to issues 10-13, where things got to pick up, and then I would have at least mustered the interest to continue because this book starts off rough: Mark Grayson begins A few years back, I picked up Invincible even knowing the caveat of how slow this started。 But I dropped it even without completing it due to how frustrated I got and now, re-reading this after watching through the amazing first season of the show, I still see why I dropped it and I don't blame myself for doing so。But only if I got to issues 10-13, where things got to pick up, and then I would have at least mustered the interest to continue because this book starts off rough: Mark Grayson begins to get his powers and thus is now lectured by his father - the most powerful superhero in the world, the famed Viltrumite: Omni-Man。 It is an all too familiar set-up because it is。 For a superhero deconstruction, it leans heavily on the tropes of a young superhero getting their powers for much too long without varying it up。 It sacrifices what little amount of pages it has for dry humor instead of developing the plot, almost as if it doesn't take itself too seriously。 We've seen this done ad infinitum in Spider-Man: it wasn't new then and certainly it has played out now to the point that I dropped it。It also rushes by the plot too fast。 When the big moment happens, it almost doesn't seem like it makes much of an impact due to how fast it goes。 Whether that is due to the strength of the writing or the constraints of the pages it all feels rushed。 It doesn't seem like Kirkman knows what to do with it because things continue as normal, maintaining the campy tone of coming of age superhero despite something sinister going on。 It could have leaned into this factor (like the show does) but it seemingly ignores and downplays the impact, even rushing past moments that I expected to have longer impact but it just doesn't。 So many opportunities to build the world and explore the character's emotions - but it just doesn't。 The story lacks the emotional depth it has become known for。Reading this again, it becomes clear to me that the show is the superior version of this story: making changes that improve upon how the horror is, shuffling the order of events to play up the horror and drama, and giving depth to characters that were barely mentioned in the story。 As I was reading it, I could not help but unfavorably compare it to the adaption that does nearly every single aspect better, brought to tenfold with the brilliant voice work and animation from the crew。 It elevates the story that I once dismissed as being standard fare into something else entirely。To conclude, this story is fine。 It is all too familiar until the very end where it all makes sense, but takes all too long to get there without much substance leading to it。 So much of it feels dated, following trends in humor that feel dated。 However, I'm reading through the second ultimate collection and it seems that Kirkman acknowledges his mistakes and improves upon everything。 So let's hope that things get better。 。。。more

Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) weaves a heartfelt world。 Where the main protagonist raw emotions jump off the page to punch you in the face。 As if you where there facing the same dilemmas。 I recommend watching the new Amazon Prime Series, really fleshes out this entire collection。

I picked this up at a Free Little Library near my parents' house, and read it about a year ago, so I don't really remember the specifics。 The TV show came out a couple of months ago and people have been talking about it so I guess I should write this review。I liked it! I like the art a lot, it's a little weird and messy but not too。 The ending was surprising to me, although I probably thought something was up (I am not good at predicting endings)。 I'd continue reading the series if it were avail I picked this up at a Free Little Library near my parents' house, and read it about a year ago, so I don't really remember the specifics。 The TV show came out a couple of months ago and people have been talking about it so I guess I should write this review。I liked it! Didn’t expect it to be so different from the Amazon screen adaptation。Invincible is an interesting superhero comic, with topnotch graphic design, a well chosen color palette, a gory story arc and lots of Easter eggs (like the Two Pines Mall)。 The first volume tells the story of Mark Grayson as he discovers and experiments with his new gained powers, under the hero name Invincible, trying to follow in his father’s footsteps – pretty difficult to achieve, since Mark’s father is none other than Omn Didn’t expect it to be so different from the Amazon screen adaptation。Invincible is an interesting superhero comic, with topnotch graphic design, a well chosen color palette, a gory story arc and lots of Easter eggs (like the Two Pines Mall)。 The first volume tells the story of Mark Grayson as he discovers and experiments with his new gained powers, under the hero name Invincible, trying to follow in his father’s footsteps – pretty difficult to achieve, since Mark’s father is none other than Omni-Man, or the greatest hero of Earth。 。。。more

I picked this one up after I binged first 6 episodes of Invincible on Amazon Prime Videos in one night。 I was totally blown away by it。I believe this volume one should cover the entirety of season one。Now the review -- I have mixed feelings。 First the artwork is amazing。 Absolutely loved it。However the character development is a bit underwhelming。 OmniMan has this 180 degree change (view spoiler)[from a loving father and husband to a monster who thinks his wife as a pet (hide spoiler)] feels rus I picked this one up after I binged first 6 episodes of Invincible on Amazon Prime Videos in one night。 I was totally blown away by it。I believe this volume one should cover the entirety of season one。Now the review -- I have mixed feelings。 First the artwork is amazing。 Absolutely loved it。However the character development is a bit underwhelming。 OmniMan has this 180 degree change (view spoiler)[from a loving father and husband to a monster who thinks his wife as a pet (hide spoiler)] feels rushed and it's hard for me to buy it。But overall this is a great book。 Though I do recommend watching the TV series first because after reading the book, the entire show feels slightly ruined because the pacing of the show is so much slower it's kinda painful and you kinda scream in your head constantly -- "just get to the point!"。 。。。more

Perhaps a symptom of seeing the show first, but I find the TV iteration to be far superior。 That's not to say this isn't enjoyable, the TV show just feels delivered with more agency and subtext, whereas the comic just feels like it's over-extending on the normality。 This largely comes down to Kirkman's writing and I have to admit, I'm not a fan of his style。 Way too much filler in the name of recreating realism, eg。 how many times can you mention, "Oh I thought you and Eve were a thing?"。。。。? An all-right superhero romp, with plenty of nods/references to popular superhero/geek figures and stories (various well-known DC superheroes, Star Trek。。。) that plays good-humoredly with well-trodden comic book and teen superhero tropes while doing its own thing with the genre, asking the question of whether a human-passing alien superhero's origin story is entirely truthful, and what it might mean if not。 It starts off lighthearted enough, but by the end there is an edge of seriousness (sometim An all-right superhero romp, with plenty of nods/references to popular superhero/geek figures and stories (various well-known DC superheroes, Star Trek。。。) that plays good-humoredly with well-trodden comic book and teen superhero tropes while doing its own thing with the genre, asking the question of whether a human-passing alien superhero's origin story is entirely truthful, and what it might mean if not。 It starts off lighthearted enough, but by the end there is an edge of seriousness (sometimes quite dark) that catches readers' interest and makes me want to see where this goes。Minor annoying quibbles: all the female characters have the same weird gooshy lips (why do so many comic book artists do this???) and in many ways look very much alike, aside from their hair。 Maybe this will change with time as the story and art develop。 Also, all the characters besides Invincible and his dad are rather under-developed, though again I suppose this may change。 。。。more

I’ve owned the first 4 ultimate collections for at least a year and a half now, but haven’t actually read them。 With the new show being so good I decided start them。。。。I really like this series, the art is really good, the gist of the writing is good。 My biggest gripe is that there are parts where the pacing is off, either the scenes move super fast, or scenes end abruptly and non-connected scenes start。 It hurts the book a little。 I’d say the first 13 issues are mostly middling, but by the end I’ve owned the first 4 ultimate collections for at least a year and a half now, but haven’t actually read them。 With the new show being so good I decided start them。。。。I really like this series, the art is really good, the gist of the writing is good。 My biggest gripe is that there are parts where the pacing is off, either the scenes move super fast, or scenes end abruptly and non-connected scenes start。 It hurts the book a little。 I’d say the first 13 issues are mostly middling, but by the end it gets REALLY good。 。。。more

3。5。 I finally got down to reading this highly recommended, highly praised story。 I like the overall plot and idea。 I think Robert comes up with a pretty gnarly concept。 The artwork does grow on me and I think it works for the funny stuff and eventually for the gorge and action。 I do think that the pacing at times felt a little fast and Robert sometimes I think wrote stuff that really felt out of place and not needed。 I'm talking full pages that just made no sense after and before other pages。 I 3。5。 I finally got down to reading this highly recommended, highly praised story。 I like the overall plot and idea。 I think Robert comes up with a pretty gnarly concept。 The artwork does grow on me and I think it works for the funny stuff and eventually for the gorge and action。 I do think that the pacing at times felt a little fast and Robert sometimes I think wrote stuff that really felt out of place and not needed。 I'm talking full pages that just made no sense after and before other pages。 It just felt like a lot of stuff happens at once way too fast。 The last few issues however were probably my faves and did better with the pacing。 All around a solid read I just think somethings were too rushed and unnecessary。 。。。more

Invincible: The Ultimate Collection vol 1 was a great introduction into this new super hero world, and is an excellent setup for what’s to come。 This first volume, simply put, was just fun。 I like the setup idea of Mark Grayson, Invincible, being a young Superman if his secret identity was Peter Parker, and I like that he’s raised by a “Superman” dad and a human mother。 I really enjoyed the organic expansion of this giant cast, and the cameos and references to other superhero titles and genres w Invincible: The Ultimate Collection vol 1 was a great introduction into this new super hero world, and is an excellent setup for what’s to come。 This first volume, simply put, was just fun。 I like the setup idea of Mark Grayson, Invincible, being a young Superman if his secret identity was Peter Parker, and I like that he’s raised by a “Superman” dad and a human mother。 I really enjoyed the organic expansion of this giant cast, and the cameos and references to other superhero titles and genres was a real treat as well!My only real gripe with vol 1 of Invincible was the pacing of the first half。 This book was a real quick read, a good chunk due to the fun nature of the writing, another due to the visual storytelling that let story show you what was happening without being redundant in explaining what you’re seeing。 These factors aren’t the problem, rather, it was how fast we got from Point A to Point B so that we had a chance to see the conclusion of this arc, Point C。 In the Afterword Robert Kirkman explains how most comics are lucky to get to 12 issues, and how a few times Invincible had to be saved from getting cancelled, and it shows。 In issue 1, not only does our hero discover he has powers, but by the end he’s already pretty comfortable with them so we can see him team up already by issue 2。 While throughout this volume we get a sense that Mark Grayson is still pretty new at the super hero game, I would have liked to have seen him grow and develop more with his powers and as a hero。 We don’t see much of him learning the ropes and limits of his abilities and powers, we see his dad explain some of his capabilities, but we don’t even really see his dad Omniman show his son the ropes or help him with his new powers either。 Instead, we see Invincible go on adventures and get put into situations where, while they were fun to read, didn’t pay off as well had we seen more growth and had them feel more earned。 Once you except all of this for what it is, once we start to get a peak behind the curtain to what this volume is ultimately building up to, that’s when things start to even out and this series becomes a lot of fun。The art in the first 6 issues was fine, but I’ll admit wasn’t my favorite。 Borderline almost a little too simplistic, while Cory Walker’s art match that almost innocent tone of the first half, it was a warm welcome to see Ryan Ottley come in on issue 7 with a similar style to Walker at the start that then slowly and organically transitioned into a cleaner, more detailed look that fully enhanced the climax of this volume。 While Kirkman explains how vital Walker was to the concepts, ideas, and characters in Invincible, it was a warm welcome for me when things started to visually round out a little cleaner。Overall, Invincible Ultimate Collection Vol 1 was a really fun, enjoyable read。 Had the beginning arc for Mark Grayson, Invincible, been more developed through another issue or 2, I might have been forgiving on the art in the first half and bumped this volume up to a full 5 stars; hopefully the new Amazon Prime series adds in that development I was missing。 That said, I really like this world and the characters within it, and the overall delivery of this first volume has me all-in as I dive into the next volume! 。。。more
